Self-World is intended as an installation-performance for double quartet, live electronics and light, placed within a portable instrumental infrastructure built from textural sheet materials. Self-World will be a modular work with both performance and exhibition outcomes, allowing audiences multiple points of access to experience the work.
Inspired by the term umwelt (German – describing the surrounding world, environment and real-time experience of organisms within it), Self-World invites audiences to consider the subjective experience of shared events through the exploration of scale, proportion and proximity as experienced as individuals and in groups. Depending on where audience members choose to place themselves, each person will have a different perspective of the work, and the events that unfold within it.
The instrumental infrastructure functions simultaneously as a bespoke performance space, large-scale percussive instrument, and surface for light refraction. This allusive and immersive infrastructure is to be built using a range of sheet materials with sonic, reflective and structural properties, with weightier materials creating alcoves to explore, lighter materials form ‘breathing walls’ responsive to the movement of air.
